CHAPTER HISTORY
State of the Chapter
The first and oldest independent Republic in Africa, established in 1847. The first Alpha Chapter in Africa was established in Monrovia, Liberia, on October 6, 1958. David N. Howell, former CEO of the Liberia YMCA, along with 17 Alpha Brothers were designated by the international leadership to establish Eta Epsilon Lambda Chapter in Monrovia. The establishment of Eta Epsilon Lambda Chapter was the hopeful beginning of a great heave of Alpha in Africa. The impetus for its establishment came from five Brothers, who were residing in Monrovia at the time. Among them were Bro. I. E. C. Steady (Xi Chapter, 1913), who was deputized at the General Convention, held in Los Angeles, California, in 1936 to set up Alpha Chapters in Africa; and Bro. David N. Howell (Alpha Iota Chapter, 1933), who was later authorized by General President Myles Paige to officiate in setting up of the Chapter. Eta Epsilon Lambda Chapter was chartered on October 6, 1958, with 17 charter members. The first official installation was held, in grand style, on February 20, 1959, at the Mesurado Hotel, in Monrovia, with Bros. Steady and Howell officiating. Others participating in the program were: Bros. Wilbert Holcomb, Dr. C. F. Scarbrough, T. R. Solomon, Dr. Christian Baker, and Cllr. Pohlman Bracewell, Jr., Chapter President. Our Chapter is involved with several activities every year, including giving scholarship annually to college students, programs in underprivileged communities, mentorship, career development, etc.

Eta Epsilon Lambda Chapter continues to make incredible strides in the areas of service and leadership to our communities and the nation. Our work continues to be recognized by our beneficiaries and national leaders. During the period under review, EEL Chapter worked very hard and was able to achieve and gained admiration through her different committees, including My Brother’s Keepers Program, the Educational Committee, World Policy Committee, and the Mentorship Committee. March 17, 2023, ahead of Liberia’s general and presidential elections, which took place on October 10, 2023, Brothers of the chapter held an outreach under the general theme: "A Voteless People Is a Hopeless People, meant to encourage Liberians of voting age to register in order to participate in the elections. The chapter also collaborated with the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the United Methodist University to celebrate the International Day of Peace in Monrovia on September 17. Under our Mentorship program, in August of 2023, several of our Mentees participated in a youth basketball camp as Counselors for kids and teenagers between the ages of thirteen (13) to twenty (20). Interacting with the kids, our Mentees gained experience in leadership and service.
